When Kevin Youkilis started this season, his expectations were high. He was to start at third base, play almost every game and contribute to the team offensively. Due to some early struggles and injuries, when he came back from the disabled list, he had trouble fitting back into the lineup.

Rookie Will Middlebrooks was called up when the Youker went on the DL and has shined since he stepped foot on the baseball diamond. Since his future looks promising and the Red Sox have been rolling, they decided to trade Youkilis to the Chicago White Sox for two other players.

When he stepped to the plate at Fenway last Sunday in his last at-bat as a member of the Sox, he hustled out a triple and was pinch-run for. As he was coming out of the game, there wasn’t one person at Fenway sitting down as they all gave him a standing ovation. He hugged teammates as he came off the field and when he was about to make it down to the clubhouse, manager Bobby Valentine summoned him to come out for one final curtain call.

He walked up the steps, turned to the crowd and waved. Teammates took their hats off to him as a sign of respect knowing what he has done for this franchise for the past nine years. It will be sad to see him lined up on the other side of the field when they next meet in July, but that is what baseball is these days. Players are constantly moving and signing with other teams.

Thank you, Kevin Youkilis, for helping the Sox break the curse and win two World Series titles within the past eight years. You will never be forgotten and we wish you luck wherever you play!
