AFL Roster is Packed with Top Prospects!

 800-698-2322 / 508-473-8929

The Arizona Fall League will be commencing its 20th anniversary, a respected finishing school for MLB prospects. It has assembled a roster of the top 24 prospects in the Minor League.  Among these top prospects is the Minors stolen base record holder, Billy Hamilton of the Reds. Hamilton, until recently was a shortstop, will be trying the outfield in Arizona.

Changing positions in the fall league is not an uncommon occurrence.  Grant Green, prospect of the A’s, will be starting his third consecutive season at a new position playing for the Phoenix Desert Dogs.  There may have been part of Green that wasn't thrilled to be heading back to Phoenix for the third season in a row, but the pros outweigh the cons for the 24 year old who hopes to make the A’s 40 man roster in the off season.

Over the past few years the number of prospects that have come to the fall league has grown, players are seeing the opportunity to showcase their skills and really get them ready for their first full season of pro ball.  Even with the newly added rules such as the earlier signing deadline, which allowed young players to get out and play, making it less likely for them to attend the Arizona league.

The primary objective of the AFL is to hone the skills of these young players and get them ready for the big league.  They are very successful in their goals, sending a large majority of their alumni to the MLB often in the following year.

Red Sox Icon and Legend Johnny Pesky dies at 92

 800-698-2322 / 508-473-8929

Adored by generation of Red Sox fans, icon Johnny Pesky was so much a part of Boston baseball that the right-field foul pole at Fenway was named for him.  His baseball career, lasting over 60 years, consisted of playing, managing and broadcasting.  Pesky passed away at 92, just a week after his final visit to Fenway, on August 5th.

''I feel like part of the Red Sox tradition just died because when I think of Johnny I think of him hitting fungos at spring training. We will all miss him so much,'' ex-pitcher Pedro Martinez said in comments provided by the Red Sox. ''He was such a representative of everything that happened in Boston. It's hard to think of the success, defeat, and all we went through without Johnny. You couldn't do anything without Johnny Pesky.''

On his 87th birthday, Sept. 27, 2006, a plaque was unveiled at the base of the foul pole just 302 feet from home plate, designating it ''Pesky's Pole.''  ''He was always there through the good and bad times with the same smile and passion for his team. `Hello my honeysuckle, hello my honey bee, my ever lovin' Jason just got three,' Johnny used to say, wishing me three hits that night.''  Said Jason Varitek.  Pesky died at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, according to Solimine, Landergan and Richardson funeral home in Lynn. The funeral home did not announce a cause of death.  ''I've had a good life with the ballclub,'' Pesky told the AP in 2004. ''I just try to help out. I understand the game, I've been around the ballpark my whole life.''  Pesky played 10 years in the majors, the first seven-plus with Boston. His No. 6 was retired in 2008.

Pesky will be greatly missed by the Boston Red Sox community

Will the Red Sox Luck Turn Around?

 800-698-2322 / 508-473-8929

The Red Sox disappointing season  seems to be continuing! The teams luck doesn't seem to be turning around. This was the case again Saturday night after letting up four runs in the ninth inning against the Minnesota Twins.

Pedro Ciriaco continues to show up at the plate, hitting his first big league home run, before teammate Cody Ross added some more offense with a RBI single.  There was a good feeling of victory before the four run, ninth, which included a two out three run homer coming from catcher Joe Mauer.  Although the Sox continue to face these lows, manager Bobby Valentine still stays optimistic saying, "It's a nice day game [Sunday], we'll bounce back, unless they're going to call off the season. If they allow us to play, we'll be out there playing hard."  While Valentine is confident in a “nice little run” most boston players realize that these are desperate times.

Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz has pitched very well as of late, but is not receiving support from the offensive side of the ball “this offense is too good to score those few runs” said Nick Punto.  Things keep going good for the Sox and then seem to turn in the opposite direction, going on streaks then instead of losing just one or two they go on a losing streak.  Things seemed to turn from good to horrible in the 9th, with two men on and a 2-2 count pitcher Aceves thought he notched strike three on a low outside fastball, but was called a ball.  The next pitch was a misplaced fastball that Joe Mauer crushed, and never seemed to land, which gave the Twins the lead and eventually the win.  David Ortiz looked on from the dugout, still sidelined with a strain to his right Achilles.  The Sox need his bat in the line-up, going 7-11 without him.  He was eligible to be activated on Aug. 1, but his return has been slower than expected.

There are  only 54 games remaining in the season, and despite the current situation, the players and management remain confident that they can turn this season around and make a serious push in the final two months.

Are you a Boston Red Sox fan? If you are, the team needs your support! Gather your friends and family and head out to the next Red Sox game and show your support! Want to ride to the game in style? Call EXCEPTIONAL LIMO today!

Wedding Favor Ideas!

 800-698-2322 / 508-473-8929

Exceptional Limousine Services was listed as the “winner” of the annual list of “the Best Boston Wedding Professional’s for Limousine Services/Valet Services in 2012,” by the wedding website www.theknot.com!

At Exceptional Limousine, we pride ourselves in providing the best white glove service and relieving the pressures and stress of you and the day of your important event.  With our professionally trained drivers that service Boston, Connecticut and Newport, Rhode Island, we will escort you in the lap of luxury to your desired location for pre and post ceremony pictures and gatherings.  Just sit back, have that cold glass of champagne and let us take you where you and your wedding party need to go.  We are here to cater to you!
We don’t want you to worry about a thing on your special day, including wedding favors, so here are a few suggestions for fall wedding favors that can help your guests remember your wedding for ever!

Caramel Apples
Treat guests to the quintessential fall indulgence -- caramel apples. Have them packaged individually and tied off with a ribbon that matches your colors so guests can grab the treat as they exit without getting caramel on their nice clothes.

Soy Candles
Capture the coziness of autumn with soy candles in shades of burnt orange, yellow, or brown. They can double as place cards, or pack them into pretty boxes that match your color palette.

Autumnal-Shaped Chocolates
Chocolate is always a favorite favor (who doesn't love a sweet after a night of dancing?), so consider chocolates in the shapes of maple leaves and acorns. Display them in individual boxes at each place setting or on trays near the dessert table.

Mini Maple Syrup Bottles
Few things represent the fall season better than maple syrup. Give mini maple syrup bottles to your guests as a sweet thank-you, or include them in farewell bags at the postwedding brunch for all to enjoy with their breakfast.

Apple Cider Mix
Packets of apple cider mix are perfect for welcome baskets and reception favors alike. Buy them prepackaged with cute sayings such as "Falling in Love," or make them yourself -- and don't forget the cinnamon stirring sticks.

Pumpkin Spice Soaps
They're practical and pretty, and your guests will love the fall scent. Get pumpkin-shaped soaps and leave them at each place setting.

Individual Apple Tarts
You don't want to upstage the cake, but fresh apple tarts are a tasty way to wow your guests.

Sunflower Seeds
Both for eating and for planting, packets of sunflower seeds are ideal for a rustic fall wedding. Display the packets on a table alongside fresh sunflowers in vases, or simply place little pouches filled with seeds at each setting.

Fresh Candied Pecans
Warm pecans coated in brown sugar will leave your guests feeling snug and satisfied. Have your caterer arrange for a pecan cart to give out the snacks toward the end of the evening.

Apple Butter
Whether you buy it or make it yourself, apple butter is a unique fall favor that not only looks the part, but tastes great too. Package the sweet spread into mini jars; cover each jar lid with fabric to match your wedding day colors; and tie them off with a thin piece of raffia and a small thank-you note.

Boston Red Sox Player Watch!

 800-698-2322 / 508-473-8929

Will Middlebrooks took a pitch off the hand from Yankees reliever David Robertson in the 10th inning Sunday Night, and had a red mark to prove it.  The umpires didn’t agree with the Red Sox third baseman, although it didn’t matter, because Middlebrooks singled to left field on the next pitch, which contributed to the Red Sox 3-2 victory in extra innings.  "I'll take the knock" said Middlebrooks, the fallout from the seemingly missed call may prove to be significant.  Bobby Valentine launched a furious objection with home plate umpire Brian O'Nora and was ejected from the game, showing emotion that many of the manager's critics have been waiting to see.  Valentine reported that O’Nora said he heard the ball hit the bat but never actually saw it.  "That's what I take exception with," Valentine said. "No one saw anything. He just heard it. What are you going to do? I'm not going to say anything that's going to get me fined."

RHP Scott Atchison, suffered a setback with his strained right forearm, Friday night in his rehab appearance with the Triple-A Pawtucket.  He is scheduled to undergo further test Monday in Boston.  Valentine admitted that the Sox “have some concern” that this injury may leave him sidelined even longer.
DH David Ortiz took batting practice again Sunday and is expected to begin some agility training to test his strained Achilles tendon.  Ortiz is eligible to come off the disabled list before Wednesday night’s game, but will only truly test his limits when he starts accelerating his running.  The results will decide if he makes an appearance against the Detroit Tigers, Wednesday at Fenway.

INF Pedro Ciriacro delivered another clutch game-winning hit to secure the 3-2 victory over the Yankees Sunday night.  Ciriaco hit an opposite field blooper into right field to score Jarrod Saltalamacchia in the 10th inning.  Although Ciriaco’s presence in the lineup at shortstop has little to do with his recent hot-streak.  It is due to “toe trouble” for starting SS Mike Aviles.  Aviles’ turf toe is causing him discomfort, particularly at the plate.  Aviles went 1-18 before being taken out of the lineup, while Ciriaco has been hot at the plate, batting .349 in his 18 games since getting the call, with three doubles and two triples.

LHP Felix Doubront continued his strong run against the Yankees in his third start of the season against New York, and his first in Yankee Stadium.  He overcame a season-high five walks and didn't allow a run until Russell Martin's leadoff homer in the seventh inning.  At one point, Doubront struck out Derek Jeter, Curtis Granderson, Mark Teixeira and Robinson Cano in succession on 17 pitches.  After a great performance Doubront took a no-decision after reliever Andrew Miller and closer Alfredo Aceves teamed to allow the tying run in the eighth inning, Doubront allowed one run in 6 2/3 innings and lowered his ERA against the Yankees to 2.41. "That was fun," Doubront said. "I was just looking to pitch. I wasn't scared to pitch here. I just wanted to get the job done, and that's what I did."

Will the Patriots Come Out on Top This Year?

 800-698-2322 / 508-473-8929

As a coach and coordinator in the National Football League, Bill Belichick has as many rings as the Olympics logo. Belichick sets his expectations high. And then he manages them impeccably.  Which is a good thing.
Fresh off yet another Super Bowl defeat to Tom Coughlin, Eli Manning and the New York Giants, Belichick and the Patriots will open training camp on Thursday with perhaps their deepest roster since the fateful 2007 campaign.  For a team who had just made it to the Super Bowl with an impressive regular season record, their schedule looks relatively soft for the upcoming year.  Although there are no guarantees in sports, particularly in the NFL, as we saw with the 15-1 Green Bay Packers, the Patriots look like a leading candidate to secure a top two seed in the AFC next season, if they stay healthy.  So what could derail this team?  Many things, which Belichick will certainly point out.  Here are five factors worth considering as this team enters their training camp.
  • The offensive line is currently in a state of disarray:
This is hardly a minor concern.  Matt Light has retired. Logan Mankins and Sebastian Vollmer will begin camp on the physically unable to perform list.  As for Brian Waters, us outsiders of the Patriots organization believe he is “up in the air.”  That leaves more questions than answers in front of quarterback Tom Brady.
Of course, it is difficult to imagine that Belichick is unprepared for any of this. He must know that Waters is returning. He has resigned both Dan Koppen and Dan Connolly, and he has added Robert Gallery for depth.  He still has Marcus Cannon and Nate Solder, among others. Last season, the Patriots lost Koppen in the season opener at Miami, which obviously didn’t affect them much.
  • The defense:
One of Belichick’s long lasting tenets, is that points matter, not yards.  But the truth is that yards hurt the Patriots in the Super Bowl.   The Giants held the ball for 37:05 to the Patriots 22:55 and the Patriots defense simply could not get off the field.  Beginning in 2007, the Patriots defense has gone from fourth to 10th to 11th to 25th to 31st in yards allowed.  That is the second worst in the league, which really shows how good their offense is. Even Belichick now seems to have conceded that this has been a major problem, spending much of the offseason revamping the defense through the draft and free agency. The Patriots did not sign Mario Williams, but they spent almost all of their draft collateral (including two first-round picks -- Chandler Jones and Dont'a Hightower) on defense and made a handful of free-agent acquisitions (Jonathan Fanene, Steve Gregory, Trevor Scott).  The development of this defense will without a doubt be one of the major stories of this season.
  • The backfield:
As we all know the Patriots are a pass first run second team, as well they should be with an elite quarterback like Tom Brady.  In the final eight games of the past season Brady threw 19 touchdowns and just two interceptions, matching the pace he held during much of the 2010 season.  Belichick added fullback Spencer Larsen to the mix, but the cast of potential ball carriers really seems to include only Joseph Addai, Stevan Ridley, Danny Woodhead and Shane Vereen, none of which are elite runners.  So who gets the ball on 3rd and 1?  Or do the patriots abandon all pretense and throw?
Remember: after fumbling in a meaningless situation against Denver in the playoffs last year, Ridley never got the ball again. Vereen has 15 attempts in his career. Addai has averaged better than four yards per carry just once in the last four years, and Woodhead is more of a situational back most effective as a runner when operating out of spread formations.  Some of this obviously relates to the state of the offensive line, but will the Patriots have any power running game if and when they need it?
  • Injuries, specifically to You Know Who:
The last time the patriots came of a Super Bowl loss, Brady did not make it through the first quarter of the next season opener.  This changed the Patriots entire season, handing the starting position to Matt Cassel, who led them to an 11-5 season, which is widely considered a success in these parts.
Brady turning 35 next week has a lot less time in the hourglass than he did four years ago.  There is every chance someone like Brian Hoyer could lead the Patriots to double digit wins for a 10th straight season, but every year becomes a little more urgent for Brady to obtain one last ring.  Obviously, keeping Brady out of harm’s way is Priority 1 every season, but this becomes more and more important each year as he ages.
  • History:
History and superstition are always a large part of sports.  Since the Miami Dolphins rebounded from a Super Bowl loss and went undefeated in 1972, no Super Bowl loser has come back to win the title the next season.  In the case of the Patriots, who are now 3-4 in seven Super Bowl appearances, the season after their three previous defeats have produced records of 11-5, 10-6 and 11-5.  These are good regular season records on paper, but we all know the post season is the only thing that matters, and the Pats didn’t make it past the divisional round in any of those years.
In the last five years, the only Super Bowl loser to have even won a playoff game the following year is the Arizona Cardinals who made it to the divisional round in 2009. Pittsburgh lost in the wildcard round last year. Indianapolis lost in the wildcard round the previous season. Prior to Arizona, the Patriots and Chicago Bears missed the playoffs entirely.  Given his attention to detail, Belichick undoubtedly knows this.  He will make sure his players do as well.

This past Sunday afternoon, the PawSox took the game from Syracuse winning 4-1 at McCoy Stadium. Pitcher Clay Buchholz went almost 3 full innings, giving up one hit and struck out two batters! Nate Spears hit a two run homerun in the game and J.C. Linares and Ryan Lavarnway each added an RBI!

The PawSox will now take a couple of days off for the Triple-A All Star break. The PawSox will resume their season at McCoy Stadium on July 12th when they host Buffalo. The game will begin at 7:05 p.m. That will also kickoff the PawSox hosting and 8 game homestand!
